Aujourd’hui je vous emmène dans les profondeurs de l’underground, en vous parlant de musique, de production, mais également de support physique, sans oublier la création de cette nouvelle entité qu’est Evolcraft.
Au niveau du support, pour la plupart d’entre vous, vous n’avez pas connu la fameuse K7 (cassette/tape). Et pour les connaisseurs, il est aujourd’hui plutôt rare de trouver des démos sous forme de K7. Il faut vraiment suivre de près le milieu de l’underground et les petits labels qui agissent dans l’ombre ou tout simplement des groupes old school voulant garder une réelle authenticité et pour qui l’objet est d’une importance capitale. Il y a de toute manière plusieurs raisons d’utiliser la K7 et c’est en tous les cas une marque d’identité bien ancrée dans l’underground.
Donc quand j’ai reçu un matin une K7 dans ma boîte aux lettres, l’émotion était palpable. J’ai ouvert l’enveloppe comme si elle contenait un précieux trésor.
Si je vous parle du groupe italien Inner Shrine (cliquez-ici pour voir la présentation du groupe sur notre site), pour beaucoup ça ne doit rien vous dire. Et c’est fort dommage car cette entité propose une musique très Dark, mélancolique et très belle.
Alors si je vous parle d’Evolcraft autre groupe italien provenant de la ville de Florence, là je pense que quasiment personne ne le connaît. Et bien c’est de ce dernier dont je vais vous parler aujourd’hui avec sa première démo « Mystical Madness » sortie en octobre 2011. Si je vous ai parlé d’Inner Shrine c’est que Leonardo Moretti un des membres fondateurs du groupe a quitté le navire après y avoir passé 16 ans pour fonder ce nouveau groupe qu’est Evolcraft. Et ces deux entités sont maintenant bien éloignées musicalement et bien plus encore. Alors qu’Inner Shrine prend une tournure de plus en plus moderne avec un nouvel album à sortir en novembre, Evolcraft est indéniablement ancré dans le passé et l’Old School, ainsi que dans un style bien plus lugubre. Leonardo revient avec ce groupe à quelque chose de plus authentique et primitif.
Je voulais un trésor pour cette K7, je pense que c’est le cas ici. Surtout que le label Ordo MCM Records l’a édité seulement à 50 exemplaires.
Evolcraft se dit un groupe de NecroDoom avec des paroles inspirées de Lovecraft. Vous comprenez maintenant le nom du groupe je pense ? « Love » à l’envers donne « Evol ». Evolcraft est alors une ode à H.P. Lovecraft, ce célèbre écrivain américain connu pour ses récits d’horreur, de fantastique et de science-fiction.
Pas de paroles imprimées sur la pochette cartonnée mais ceux qui connaissent Lovecraft doivent deviner plus ou moins de quoi parlent les trois chansons que composent cette démo, même avec le nom des titres.
La pochette de couleur verte me fait penser un peu au château dans le film « Labyrinthe » sorti en 1986 de Jim Henson avec le roi des gobelins Jareth joué par David Bowie, qui vivait dans celui-ci.
Mais musicalement à quoi correspond du NecroDoom ? Je vais vite le savoir. J’insère ce précieux trésor dans mon lecteur K7 et c’est parti pour une vingtaine de minutes.
Dès les premières notes de Prayers of the Unknown, nous sommes bien en présence d’un groupe de Doom. Ca ne fait aucun doute, le rythme est lent et très lourd. Le son de la guitare est crade et la basse est écrasante. La voix n’est pas en reste et est plutôt inhabituelle même pour ce genre de Doom. Elle est également crade et gutturale. Le chanteur Andrea Tileberis (ex-Symbolic) profère des incantations divinatoires afin de réveiller le tout-puissant grand Cthulhu qui dort au fond du Pacifique Sud dans la cité sous-marine de R’lyeh. Evolcraftattend de pieds fermes son retour en espérant que ses prières seront exaucées pour sortir du sommeil le Maître de l’abîme afin qu’il apporte la destruction de notre monde condamné. Le style indiqué prend du coup toute son ampleur car c’est un peu reveiller les morts, que fait ici les italiens sur cette demo.
Evolcraft se dit un groupe religieux, dévoué au prophète H. P. Lovecraft qui parlait à leur dieu, Cthulhu, enfin qui créa le mythe de celui-ci. D’ailleurs le groupe italien entend en lui des voix intérieures. Il suffit d’écouter Voices from Inner Wells. Comme le titre de l’album “Mystical Madness” signifie “La folie mystique”, celui-ci d’écrit bien l’esprit de Lovecraft au travers du groupe. Car Lovecraft ne croyait pas en un Dieu unique, aimant et protecteur ni à un monde spirituel. Son monde n’est fait que de dieux malvaillants accordant plus de credits à la science qu’aux écritures du livre de la Genèse par exemple. Lovecraft parle ici dans cette substance incorporelle qu’est l’esprit du groupe afin de reveiller à tout prix Cthulhu. L’ambiance musicale de Voices from Inner Wells est lente et opressante. La production délibérement poisseuse de la démo tient également une grande importance dans cette atmosphère pesante.
Invisible Stars n’est pas là pour arranger les choses. Quelques coups sur la batterie de Guilia, un solo de Leonardo et Andrea revient chuchoter dans les ténèbres. Est-ce que ces invisibles étoiles représentent la dimension cosmique que Lovecraft donnait à Cthulhu ? Ce Grand Ancien est en tous les cas l’équivalent d’un dieu extraterrestre millénaire jadis banni du lointain système de Xoth (lequel pourrait correspondre à l’étoile Bételgeuse dans la constellation d’Orion) par les « dieux très anciens ». Cette chanson a du être inspirée de la nouvelle de Lovecraft “De l’au-delà” (“From Beyond”). Les sonorités de la guitare se veulent alors plus aigues sur cette chanson, avec quelques envolées tout de même.
Evolcraftest un groupe difficile à saisir tant l’oeuvre de Lovecraft est complexe, sans limite dans l’imaginaire et la croyance ainsi que dans l’existence malsaine et sans frontières physiques et morales de Cthulhu.
Dans sa nouvelle « L’Appel de Cthulhu » (1926), H. P. Lovecraft parle de Cthulhu en ces termes :
« Johansen estime que deux des six hommes qui ne regagnèrent pas le bateau moururent de peur à cet instant maudit. Nul ne saurait décrire le monstre ; aucun langage ne saurait peindre cette vision de folie, ce chaos de cris inarticulés, cette hideuse contradiction de toutes les lois de la matière et de l’ordre cosmique. »
Le groupe italien ne pouvait trouver meilleure musique que le Doom pour faire appel à Cthulhu. “Mystical Madness” est une première demo réussie, meme avec sa production assez moyenne sûrement voulue, qui est en accord avec les croyances d’Evolcraft. Parfois les mots dépassent la musique, enfin faut-il y croire pour comprendre cette ténébreuse oeuvre ? La musique est ici une passerelle pour les incantations faites par le groupe à leur Dieu. Je dois dire que je ne suis pas habitué à ce genre de creation artistique et cosmique. Mon cerveau a été malemené et torturé je dois dire.
Pourtant ça n’est pas la première fois que le « Mythe de Cthulhu » est évoqué dans le domaine musical. Metallica, Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, Cradle Of Filth et bien d’autres ont déjà fortement contribué à ce mythe. Mais pour Evolcraft c’est une vraie religion et la musique Doom est ici leur façon de la pratiquer et de vouer leur culte à Cthulhu grâce au visionnaire H.P. Lovecraft.
La musique d’Evolcraft est vraiment primaire, n’y cherchez pas la moindre modernité. La musique ici n’est qu’un support pour la pratique de leur religion et de leurs prières diaboliques pour le réveil du Grand Ancien et par conséquent de la destruction de notre monde.

Today I take you in the depths of the underground, by speaking to you about music, about production, but also about physical support, without forgetting the creation of this new Evolcraftentity.
About the support, for the most part of you, you did not know the famous K7 (tape band). And for the amateurs, it is today rather rare to find demos in the form of tape. It is really necessary to follow closely the environment of the underground and the small labels which act in the shade or simply the old school’s bands wanting to keep a real authenticity and for whom the object is a major importance. There are anyway several reasons for using K7 and it is an identity mark well anchored in the underground.
So when I received a tape in my mailbox, my emotion was tangible. I opened the envelope as if it contained an invaluable treasure.
If I speak to you about the Italian band Inner Shrine, for many it will tells you nothing. And it’s a pity because this entity proposes a music very Dark, melancholic and very beautiful. (Click here to read about this band on ourwebsite).
Then if I speak to you about Evolcraft, an other Italian band coming from the city of Florence, I think that almost nobody knows it. It’s about it which I am going to speak to you with its first demo « Mystical Madness » released in October, 2011. If I spoke to you about Inner Shrine it is because Leonardo Moretti, one of the founder members of the band left the ship after 16 years oh creation, to create this new band name Evolcraft. And these two entities are completely different, musically and more. While Inner Shrine takes a more and more modern form with a new album to be release in November, 2013, Evolcraft is anchored unmistakably in an Old School past, as well as in a more lugubrious style. Leonardo returns with this group to something more authentic and more primitive.
I wanted a treasure for this tape, and I think that it is the case here. Especially that the label Ordo MCM Records published it only to 50 copies.
Evolcraftclaims to be a NecroDoom band, with lyrics inspired from Lovecraft universe. You understand now the name of the band I guess ? “Love” gives “Evol” in inverted letters. Evolcraftis then an ode to H.P. Lovecraft, this famous American writer known for his narratives of horror, fantasy and science fiction.
No lyrics are printed on the home made cover, but those who know Lovecraft will guess about what speak the three songs that compose this demo, even with the name of the titles.
The black and green case-cover reminds me a little the castle in the movie « Labyrinth » (1986) of Jim Henson with king of tapestries Jareth played by David Bowie, who lived in this one.
But musically, what is the NecroDoom style ? I am going to know it. I insert this invaluable treasure into my tape reader and the tape runs for about twenty minutes.
From the first notes of Prayers of the Unknown, we are in the presence of a Doom band. That is doubtless, the rhythm is slow and very heavy. The sound of the guitar is dirty and the bass is overwhelming. The voice is not outdone and is rather unusual even for this kind of Doom. It is also dirty and guttural. The singer Andrea Tileberis (ex–Symbolic) utters divinatory incantations to wake the almighty big Cthulhu who sleeps at the bottom of the South Pacific in the submarine city of R’ lyeh. Evolcraft expects for his return hoping that thease prayers will be fulfillled to bring out of the sleep the Master of the abyss so that he brings the destruction on our condemned world. The indicated style takes its importance because it is true : this Italian band is trying to wake the deaths !.
Evolcraft claims to be a religious band, devoted to the prophet H.P. Lovecraft who spoke to their god, Cthulhu, in fact who created the myth of this one. Moreover the Italian band heard some internal voices. You just have to listen to Voices from Inner Wells. As the album title says “Mystical Madness” it means that Lovecraft thoughts flow through the band. For Lovecraft didn’ believe in one true God, loving and protector, neither to a spiritual world. His world is entirely made of hostile gods granting more of credits to the science than to the writings of the Book of Genesis for example. Lovecraft spoke through the spirit band to wake Cthulhu. The musical ambiance of Voices from Inner Wells is slow and oppressive. The deliberately sticky production of the demo also holds a big importance in this heavy atmosphere.
Invisible Stars is not there to sort out things. Some notes of drums by Guilia, a Leonardo solo and Andrea comes back to whisper in the darkness. Do these invisible stars do represent the cosmic dimension which Lovecraft gave to Cthulhu ? This Big Old one is at any rate the equivalent of a thousand-year-old extraterrestrial god, formerly banished of distant system of Xoth (who could correspond to the star Bételgeuse in the constellation of Orion) by the « very old gods « . This song was certainly inspired from the text “From Beyond” by Lovecraft. The tones of the guitar aim to be more acute in this song, with some notes flights.
Evolcraft is a band difficult to seize for the work of Lovecraft is complex, without limit in the imagination and the faith as well as in the unhealthy existence and without physical and moral borders of Cthulhu.
In the text « The call of Cthulhu » (1926), H. P. Lovecraft speak about Cthulhu in this words:
«Poor Johansen’s handwriting almost gave out when he wrote of this. Of the six men who never reached the ship, he thinks two perished of pure fright in that accursed instant. The Thing cannot be described|there is no language for such abysms of shrieking and immemorial lunacy, such eldritch contradictions of all matter, force, and cosmic order.»

The Italian band can’t find a best music style than Doom to call Cthulhu. “Mystical Madness” is a first successful demo, even with its average production that is certainly deliberate, in agreement with the faiths of Evolcraft. Sometimes, words are more than music, do we have to have the faith in this religion to understand this work. Music is here a bridge for the incantations made by the band to their God. I must say that I usually not listen to this style of music, this artistic and cosmic creation. My brain was tortured !
Nevertheless that is not the first time when the « Myth of Cthulhu » is evoked in the musical domain. Metallica, Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, Cradle Of Filth and many others have already strongly contributed to this myth. But to Evolcraft it is a real religion, and the Doom music is their way to practise it and to dedicate their cult to Cthulhu thanks to the visionary H.P. Lovecraft.
Evolcraft music is really primary, don’t you even look for modernism. This music is only a support for the practice of their religion and their devilish prayers for the awakening of the Great Old one and consequently the destruction of our world.
